Joseph Bohigian is a composer and performer whose cross-cultural experience as an Armenian-American is a defining message in his music. His work explores the expression of exile, cultural reunification, and identity maintenance in diaspora. Joseph’s works have been heard at the Oregon Bach Festival, June in Buffalo, Walt Disney Concert Hall, New Music on the Point Festival, TENOR Conference (Melbourne), and Aram Khachaturian Museum Hall.
This piece aims to corroborate years of tradition that links breathing in unison to a common spiritual good amongst players and listeners alike. The music that comes from this improvised score is a plead and an expression of gratitude.
Hailed as “a master composer and improviser” by The North Shore News, Vancouver-based Róisín Adams’ visionary work combines ethereal, textured melodicism with an underpinning of intellectual rigor. An imaginative and immensely prolific composer, pianist, bandleader and educator, Adams is also an astute collaborator in a range of projects. Her work has been featured at the Silk Purse Jazz Waves Series, Queer Arts Festival, Sonic Boom Festival, Western Front, Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity and TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival.
As a multimedia artist of infinite curiosity, Feli Navarro creates and explores across performance, sound and media art. With a background in audiovisual engineering and music technology, he expanded his artistic field of action receiving training as a performer and actor as well.
Dara Bramson is interested in peaceful encounters with the unknown. She explores the world through the lens of cultural anthropology as a multi-medium ethnographer.
Jaime D. Rojas is is interested in reframing our social, cultural geopolitical, cosmological, and ecological realities.
Ashlin Aronin is a Portland-based sound and software artist involved in virtual placemaking. Through a combination of the natural and synthetic, he explores affectivity under capitalism through a lens of ecology and the sacred. He creates interactive online experiences based around rituals that mimic and symbolize aspects of our daily lives. He also composes and performs music, using modular synthesizer and field recordings to construct evolving aural landscapes.
This score is the initial section of longer score, “The Shape of Sound”, exploring how drawing sound affects the experience of listening and vocalizing. Visualizing sound working with both sides of the body to kinesthetically experience sound, becomes an avenue for deep listening. The full score continues with slowly vocalizing the sound you’ve focused on, listening with your entire body, and creating the shape with your voice for as long as possible, building it slowing and bringing it back down to quiet. I composed the full score while studying with Pauline and dedicate it to her.
Laurie Polster is a cross-disciplinary artist, vocalist/musician and composer. Her work in video, audio composition, installation, sculpture, performance, and text pieces reflects her focus on issues relating to culture, memory, and natural phenomenon. Her work is exhibited nationally and held in numerous public and private collections. She’s received grants, awards and residencies, including a Jerome Foundation Fellowship and Artist Residencies at Anderson Ranch Arts Center. She holds an M.F.A. in Art from Massachusetts College of Art, and an M.F.A. in Electronic Music from Mills College.
Sissj Bassani is an Italian dancer and choreographer. She moves between improvisation and choreographic writing, interested in the thresholds, moments of transition in which the action is both itself and its opposite. She works with choreography as a means of igniting spaces and creating conditions of movement, vision and listening, attracted by long durations. She loves pop culture and Internet phenomena.
Create a vocal performance for someone or something you care for, based on the spelled individual letters of their name. When performing, maintain focused care and attention upon the mediating technology of microphone/camera. These devices are your subject’s emotional and physical proxy. Text can be repeated in part or in whole, focusing on individual sounds. Each letter may be repeated as many times as necessary to create the intimate “flow” desired. Feel free to create transitions or blend between directives, however there is no going back once you have progressed to the next step.
Erin Gee is a performance artist and composer based in Tio’tia:ke/Montreal. Through her practice in sound and emerging technology, she contributes to contemporary conversations on the role of critical sensuality, care, and emotional sensitivity in technological culture. She is a DIY expert in affective technologies and affective vocal technique, implicating the listener’s body by extending her practice of biofeedback music into psychosomatic territory. Her work in vocal composition, networked performance, ASMR, interactive virtual reality work, and robotics has been shown internationally.
Catherine Lee actively commissions evocative new music and has extensive experience in classical, contemporary, interdisciplinary collaborations, and free improvisation settings on the oboe, oboe d’amore, and English horn. Lee’s most recent solo CD, Remote Together (Redshift Records, 2021), nominated for the 2022 JUNO Award Classical Album of the Year (Solo Artist), features works by Canadian and American composers residing in the Pacific Northwest. Lee holds a Doctor of Music in Oboe performance from McGill University, and a certification from the Deep Listening Institute.
Christine is a composer from Iowa City, IA, whose music has been performed by Alkali Collective, Bob Spring, the Walden School Creative Musicians, line upon line, Will Yager, Wolftone, Dog Star Orchestra, Density512, ETHEL, Southland Ensemble, Koehne Quartet, a.pe.ri.od.ic, Alarm Will Sound, the Chicago Civic Orchestra Fellows, JACK Quartet, Talea Ensemble, Heavy Air, The Living Earth Show, NOW Ensemble, and Kamratōn Ensemble. Upcoming projects include performances with Lex Leto x Christine Burke Ensemble, as well as new works for Duo Axis and for Gabi Vanek & Daniel Schreiner.
