When I first heard about the idea that a painting has musical qualities I was surprised and amazed. Since then I research this juxtaposition in my paintings and in collaborations with musicians and composers. This text composition is inspired by this research and lets you experience three levels of music in a painting (by which you become a time traveller, too).
Eva Jeske is a Visual Artist and Philosopher (M.A.), living and working in Cologne, Germany. Her artistic focus lays on abstract, expressive paintings, graphics and installations. Her style varies from extreme dynamic, rhythmic complex structures to minimalistic artworks. The strong musical aspects of her paintings are used for collaborations with musicians and composers to explore, analyze, differentiate and question the border between Paintings and Music
Gretchen Jude is an experimental performer, improviser and award-winning composer for film, dance and theater. Born and raised in the wild state of Idaho, Jude is interested in the complex interactions between nature and technology. Jude holds an M.F.A. in Electronic Music & Recording Media from Mills College and a Ph.D. in Performance Studies (with a Designated Emphasis in Sonic Practice as Research) from the University of California, Davis, along with certification from the Sawai Koto Institute and the Deep Listening Institute.
The composition is written to challenge a willing performer to undertake a creative music process in an ordinary situation. To tune one’s ears to nuance and complexity and power of an everyday situation is a central tenet of Deep Listening as I understand it.

This is a collection of three text scores I wrote to begin applying some of my Deep Listening experiences to the 4th and 5th grade string ensemble classes I teach at the Whidbey Island Waldorf School. After some trial and error I found that a very simple, game-oriented approach (though without winners or losers) worked best with my students, and to let them draw their own conclusions about the value of the process. They have enjoyed these exercises and I am encouraged to continue working along this line!
I am a teacher, musician and farmer living on Whidbey Island in Puget Sound. I teach String Ensemble Class at a local Waldorf school, and play violin in local orchestras and electric guitar in a modestly-experimental rock band. I am a dedicated bird watcher and bird listener and I compose music based around local bird song. In the Summer of 2021 I participated in the Deep Listening Intensive I workshop, which I loved, and am planning on doing the Intensive II during the Summer of 2023. https://briankenney.bandcamp.com/releases
